Muskrat Removal and Control

Muskrats are semi-aquatic rodents that live primarily in wetlands and near freshwater rivers, lakes and ponds. They got their name from their glands that produce a musky odor with which they mark their territory.

The muskrat’s primary nuisance trait is their intensive burrowing, which can undermine the integrity of earthen ditch banks, levees, dams and dikes, causing water leaks and even failure. They can also damage property by eating lawns, gardens and ornamental plants, as well agricultural crops. Their underground digging can kill the roots of vegetation to the point that re-growth may take years.

Short and stocky animals, they have a lustrous coat which is prized by the fur industry. Their partially webbed feet help in their water activities, but the long, scaly flattened tail is their primary means of navigation in the slow-moving waterways they prefer.

They build their homes either burrowed in a bank with an underwater entrance or in lodges, which can be swept away by spring waters and need to be rebuilt every year. Muskrats are most active from dusk through early dawn, eating aquatic vegetation.

Muskrat have 2-3 litters annually, of 6-8 young, easily creating a nuisance.

Muskrat Diseases

Muskrats, like many fur bearing animals, harbor bacterial and parasitic diseases not normally dangerous to humans.

Professional Removal and Control of Muskrats

Muskrats are best controlled by trapping and removal, especially when confronted with specific property damage areas.
