Rabbit Removal and Control

The familiar cottontail rabbit is found in abundance in Pennsylvania little wonder, since their breeding season lasts nine months. The average litter size is between 4 -12 kits who are weaned between 4-5 weeks of age. All this adds up to the fact that a single female can produce about 800 descendants in a single season!

Since they prefer green vegetation and with large populations in any given area, they can cause extensive damage to agriculture, gardens, ornamental trees, shrubbery, fruits, vegetables, and lawns.

Rabbits are herbivores, ingesting large amounts of grass, leafy weeds and vegetables. They will graze intermittently throughout the day in a non threatening environment, but are generally most active at twilight and into the evening. They can live 5 -10 years, creating huge local populations, posing a damage threat to farmers, as well as homeowners with gardens and lush landscaping.

They prefer brush land, which provides plenty of cover, including creeks and streams, along edges of farmland, and fence rows.

Rabbit Diseases

As with all mammals, they are carriers of a variety of parasites that can transfer diseases to humans. Tularemia – known as rabbit fever – can be transmitted to humans in direct contact with a rabbit or from a tick or deer fly infected with the disease.

Professional Removal and Control of Rabbits

Rabbits are controlled with trapping and relocation. It is not desired or even possible to eliminate them completely, so removing the invading rabbits from your environment is the preferred method. Other ongoing steps you can take include:

  • Remove brush piles, log piles, lumber and other objects that make good hiding and nesting places for rabbits. Making their environment less habitable will send them in search of a new one.
  • Construct rabbit-proof fences around your gardens and flowerbeds.
