Chipmunk Removal and Control

That cute little chipmunk whose antics entertain you can also cause serious damage to home and property. A member of the squirrel family, they generally live in woodlands, but also are numerous around suburban and rural homes.

Their distinctive reddish color and brown and light stripes down the back make them easy to recognize. They dart around with their tails upright and stand upright and alert when they sense danger.

Chipmunks are omnivores, eating nuts, grains, fruits, small frogs, worms, and occasionally small mice. They can be destructive to ornamental gardens, digging up the bulbs and seeds. In early fall they start to stockpile their expansive tunnels with food for the winter. Their cheek pouches can hold numerous food items for transportation to their burrows.

They mate from early spring to late summer with 2 litters per year, with 2 – 5 young per litter. With a 1-3 year life span it is easy to see how they can become a nuisance critter.

They are mostly burrowing rodents and build their tunnels around rock piles, outbuildings, landscaping, and below patios and building foundations. They can climb trees to gather acorns, and will often use the branches to drop onto roofs and gain entry into walls and attics. When they become numerous around a home, they can cause structural damage by undermining foundations, patios, steps, retaining walls and sidewalks.

Chipmunk Diseases

Chipmunks are the primary carriers of the deer tick, which can cause Lyme disease in humans.

Professional Removal and Control of Chipmunks

Trapping and removing the nuisance animals is the fastest and most effective way to eliminate them. Their burrows are identifiable by the two-inch-round hole they use for access. Once the chipmunks have been removed, the holes should be plugged or closed with wire screen to prevent re-infestation.
